I’ve done posts like this in the past but haven’t blogged about books in almost two years. Crazy considering how much I love reading. Like I read 65 books this year? That’s the most I’ve ever read in a year before! I may have read a lot of books this year, but there were not a lot of five or even four stars.
Previously I’ve shared 5 to 12 books on these lists, and this time I have nine books. And for once, most of them were actually published in 2019 (or 2018).
One more note before we get started, these are not in any ranking order! So the first one is not necessarily the best and the last is not necessarily the worst.
Not going to lie, I picked up this book just because it had ‘Edinburgh’ in the title. You can make the girl leave Scotland, but you can never kill her study abroad obsession.
I was actually so impressed with this book! The author was perfectly able to capture how it feels to walk around in Edinburgh and really did their research on Scotland in the early 1800s. I haven’t read historical fiction in forever, but this book made me want to start doing that again.
And did I mention it was a murder mystery as well? Sign me up! I was actually so impressed with this storyline, the characters, and the author’s writing in general that I stalked her up and down GoodReads to see what else she had written.
Description from GoodReads:
“As a new century approaches, Edinburgh is a city divided. The wealthy residents of New Town live in comfort, while Old Town’s cobblestone streets are clotted with criminals, prostitution, and poverty.
Hi hello. Sorry I’ve been really absent with the book talk basically all year. The last time I wrote a book review post was back in January. Oops. But I have a good reason: I’ve barely read anything!
I’ve read eleven books since I last talked about them, which means I’m still six books behind on my reading goal. *Cries*
Today I will be reviewing seven of those eleven books. I’m excluding a poetry book I read and three books from a series I will be putting in a post all their own! So get hype for that.
But without further adieu, let’s talk books!
Girls and Sex
If you’ve read any of my book review posts before, then you know I have this thing for books with IPV because I took a class about consent freshman year of college. So when I read the description of this book instantly thought it would be a great read, and I was right!
This book was a great insight into the culture surrounding sex and not just with college-aged girls. The author interviews girls in high schools, too! I had someone think it was weird that I was reading a book about sex, but the book is not about sex itself. It’s about how girls view sex and how it integrates with relationships with friends and partners and oneself. The author also talks about how sex is viewed in different cultures and how Americans may learn to make sex less taboo, in effect maybe making unsafe sex less common in the States.
I feel like I haven’t talked about books on here in forever!! I’ve been so busy pushing out study abroad and travel content that most of my other topics have hit the back burner. Which makes me really sad, because as much as I love traveling, reading will always have my heart and is something I’ll always have the privilege to do.
So far, this year has been pretty slow on the whole reading regimen. Last year, I somehow racked up 52 books. This year I set my goal to 40 books to keep it within reason with all the traveling I’ll be doing the first part of the year. I’ve only read nine books so far, which has me on track to reach my goal, but I still feel like I’m never reading.

The truth is I don’t set aside time to read every night here like I did when I was back in the states. I know it’s because all my reading here is done on my iPad and it’s just not the same as curling up with a physical book. I need to get to the library here and see if I can check out some real books!
Enough rambling about my book situation and onto the actual book reviews, which is what you’re most likely here for anyway!
I feel like I haven’t written anything about books in ages but I just had a book post go up less than a month ago! Granted, that was my favorite books from all of 2017 and not really individual book reviews so I haven’t really written real reviews since my October reviews.
I had taken a break from sharing my book reviews because I got super burnt out on books. I was forcing myself to read books I didn’t find all the interesting and making myself read them as fast as possible to make it seem like I read quite a bit. So I took a step back from sharing my reading habits here on the blog and it really helped me tap back into my love for stories and why I love reading. Not to show off how much I read, but to escape my life and jump into another exciting one.
Since I didn’t share all the books I read in November or December I’m including two from that time period in this post as well! Oh, and most of these I read as ebook versions so I don’t have personal pictures of them.
